Beyond the banks of lake Michigan, beyond the traffic of Chicago and past the sweet smells of fresh cut hay and rows of knee-high sweet corn there is a little town at the southern tip Illinois called Cairo (“CARE-oh”). This little city of just 3,600 exists at the confluence of the Ohio River and the mighty Mississippi. It’s a post-industrial rust-belt town that had long since lost its luster. With the abandoned hotels and gas lamps of an obviously upscale downton now left to rot, Cairo looks more like an abandoned Hollywood set than the quintessential Norman Rockwellian town that it once was.

Even during an economic downturn some business continue to thrive. As I drove across country I saw one of these businesses booming from state to state. Yes, even during a recession, we'll gladly fork over money to blow stuff up on the fourth of July. In St. Paul, Kansas I met three girls running their family fire work stand. Here's what they had to say...

Two weeks ago I went back to my home town of Ithaca/Trumansburg in Central New York (CNY) to see how the area was holding up under the recession. I also went back to see what it would be like if things got so bad that I had to move home due to unemployment. Moving home would be my plan B. The following piece is the first in a four part series that i'll be producing based on that trip: The CNY Reports. Part 1: My Plan B.
