Well, like alot of you, I was laid off due to the economy and downsizing of the company. The unfortunate part is the industry I was in is going down the tubes (printing) and I have been doing this all my life. I am almost 60 and now I have to change my life around and find another occupation among all the graduates.....not fair....but I will survive, not sure how right now. Trying to find an industry that I can be passionate about and use my excellent skills and experiences in to benefit all.
I've recently been in touch with alot of working people and I have to tell you, the fact that they are working and I am not is amazing to me. People don't care anymore. They don't smile. There not happy working. Why the hell are they working at their jobs anyway....geeze.

My name is Bessie and I am a journalism grad student at Columbia University. Pretty much getting back into school has saved my butt because I was able to get student loans and defer the painful job search for a year. Now that I am here, a partner and I are working on a mini-documentary about unemployment for our class, under the theme of "Hard Times." We are looking for one person to be our character.

This person needs to:
-be in unemployment benefits, about to run out of them or has ran out
-Live in New York (Manhattan area)
-Feel comfortable sharing his or her experiences
-Most importantly feel very comfortable being taped

We need to talk to people and have two potential candidates for our professors by this coming week. I have been looking everywhere but haven't been lucky. Although you wouldn't get paid this would be an interesting project and you would really help in putting as face and tale to this huge problem our country is facing.

The mini film will be featured in the university's class website along with a written story, which are available for the general public and press allies. Any help is appreciated and serious inquiries can contact me directly.
Thanks in advance,
Bessie

I was unfairly fired in May after surviving multiple layoffs. I had been kept because of my high performance and revenue intake. Than a inexperienced back stabbing ditz became our Manager and harrassed me for 30 days until she fired me. All I wanted to do was come to work everyday and do my job. But the b*tch wouldn't allow that. With the unemployment as high as it is..finding a job would be a miracle. But that isn't even half the battle. How can you even trust that the employer is going to keep you? Remember if they want to get rid of you, they will find a reason to get rid of you. It has nothing to do with job performance

great point marie--in this joke of a country, an employer can hire/fire willy nilly without ANY justification, ethically or not--who then would chose to work for someone else given this employment "arrangement?" especially if one has student loans, mortgage, used car payment, gas, electric--all DEPENDENT upon some joker employer?!?!
