How to Make Unemployment a Positive Experience

SADLife is full of ups and downs as it should be – if there were only ups, we would never learn how to deal with the downs and vice versa. Unemployment is probably one of the biggest and hardest troughs that we must cross, and most of us dread the very thought of this word. When we have families to feed and kids to put through school, it’s hard to face the fact that you don’t have a job that puts money in your pocket and keeps you out of debt. But, there are ways to create crests out of troughs and turn your negative experiences into positive ones, by:

  • Being prepared: Calamity can strike anyone, so if you think you’re sheltered, you’re living in a dream world. It’s always good to be positive, but with a tinge of realism. Only when you plan for emergencies before they occur are you prepared to deal with them without panicking when they do happen. And in order to be prepared for unemployment, you must have some money set aside as savings to cover your basic necessities until you’re able to find a new job.
  • Considering other alternatives: While it’s easy to talk of being prepared, most people are very often taken unawares when unemployment does catch up with them. In such cases, it’s best to get over your depression and anger and channel them into positive avenues like considering other job options. Sometimes, being laid off from one job is a blessing in disguise because you may end up with something much bigger and better a few months down the line. I remember the day I was fired from my job as a sub editor at a newspaper that was downsizing its staff. I cried and moped around for days. But as I slowly began to develop my freelance writing career, I started to realize that I was making much more money working at something I really loved, with a flexible schedule to boot. So use unemployment as a stepping stone to greater or better career options.
  • Continuing your education: Some people feel it’s a waste of money to go back to school when you’re unemployed and have to pinch pennies to meet your daily expenses. Others however, see it as an opportunity to develop their skills and strengthen their resumes, a move that will hopefully help them acquire better jobs with higher salaries. If you’re hoping to acquire new skills, community college is an inexpensive option.

It’s not the end of the world if you’re unemployed; all you have to do is have the patience to ride out the downturn and the determination to find a better opportunity.

Since recessions happen EVERY decade (the dotcom boom occurred between the 1992 and 2001 busts), I structure my life accordingly (no family, home, minimum obligations).

I’m finishing an online Finance degree, and building client bases for several businesses.

Unemployment is a worldwide scenario. Government will have to focus in providing more stable jobs with high cost of salary. I want to help.

Not everyone unemployed person has been “layed off.” Many people are terminated from their jobs unjustly and unethically and often without a stated reason. If this has happened to you, please visit:

great point marie–in this joke of a country, an employer can hire/fire willy nilly without ANY justification, ethically or not–who then would chose to work for someone else given this employment “arrangement?” especially if one has student loans, mortgage, used car payment, gas, electric–all DEPENDENT upon some joker employer?!?!

I was unfairly fired in May after surviving multiple layoffs. I had been kept because of my high performance and revenue intake. Than a inexperienced back stabbing ditz became our Manager and harrassed me for 30 days until she fired me. All I wanted to do was come to work everyday and do my job. But the b*tch wouldn’t allow that. With the unemployment as high as it is..finding a job would be a miracle. But that isn’t even half the battle. How can you even trust that the employer is going to keep you? Remember if they want to get rid of you, they will find a reason to get rid of you. It has nothing to do with job performance

Dealing with EDD is far more worse than the actual job loss. They are so incompetent. It doesnt matter how honest you are they will make up make up stuff to keep from paying you.

My name is Bessie and I am a journalism grad student at Columbia University. Pretty much getting back into school has saved my butt because I was able to get student loans and defer the painful job search for a year. Now that I am here, a partner and I are working on a mini-documentary about unemployment for our class, under the theme of “Hard Times.” We are looking for one person to be our character.

    This person needs to:
-be in unemployment benefits, about to run out of them or has ran out
-Live in New York (Manhattan area)
-Feel comfortable sharing his or her experiences
-Most importantly feel very comfortable being taped

We need to talk to people and have two potential candidates for our professors by this coming week. I have been looking everywhere but haven’t been lucky. Although you wouldn’t get paid this would be an interesting project and you would really help in putting as face and tale to this huge problem our country is facing.

The mini film will be featured in the university’s class website along with a written story, which are available for the general public and press allies. Any help is appreciated and serious inquiries can contact me directly.
    Thanks in advance,
    Bessie

Well, like alot of you, I was laid off due to the economy and downsizing of the company. The unfortunate part is the industry I was in is going down the tubes (printing) and I have been doing this all my life. I am almost 60 and now I have to change my life around and find another occupation among all the graduates…..not fair….but I will survive, not sure how right now. Trying to find an industry that I can be passionate about and use my excellent skills and experiences in to benefit all.
I’ve recently been in touch with alot of working people and I have to tell you, the fact that they are working and I am not is amazing to me. People don’t care anymore. They don’t smile. There not happy working. Why the hell are they working at their jobs anyway….geeze.
    Venting………………………………………..
