Diaries of a Temp, Chapter 27: Recipe for Disaster?

2009 July 15

So THAT's what wives are for

I wouldn’t say I’m an expert cook.

Combine my lack of knowledge with my lack of resources and you get chicken on the Foreman. If you’re lucky.

But don’t get me wrong, if the moment calls for it, I can whip up some pretty tasty dishes with the best of ‘em. All I really need is a good recipe.

Which got me thinking. What is the recipe for being underemployed? What essential ingredients go into this new category of freelancing/odd-jobbing/part-timing that so many of us are now under?

I think I have the answer. Enjoy.

Best served chill. And with low expectations.

  • 1 Measure of 9-5 hatred
  • 1 Large cluster of “whatever happens, happens”
  • 1/4 cup of willingness to get paid less
  • A pinch of uncertainty
  • 4 quarts of freedom
  • 16 oz. of Blue Moon
  • A dash of fear
  •  of 3 Tablespoons of Odd Jobs
  • 1 clove of excitement
  • Mix in inability to buy fun things
  • Add more time in your underwear
  • Garnish with parental disapproval for not using your college degree
  • Serves 1, almost.

Tasty!

Let’s see it’s been a good month and a half of unemployment life and a rejection job today soooo

1 bar of I’m embarrassed to be living back home

    4oz of hopelessness

    1 cup of what-might-have-been

1oz of calling an ex on the phone (desperation needed)and let it soak with tears of rejection

A pinch of Walmart looks good right now

Mix it well with all these odd jobs that I would do if they would just look my way

Stir in the possibility of waiting tables

And let it sit for an hour while your life never seemed so uncertain before.
