7 More Reasons to Job Hop

He totally agrees

A few weeks ago, I wrote an article on job-hopping.

I argued that  although it’s commonly thought of as a negative practice, job-hopping — if done right — isn’t necessarily the career kiss of death.

I highlighted some of the benefits of the practice.

Benefits like building a new skill set, learning to adapt to new environments and earning a pay rise of up to 20%.

My exploration of the topic got me thinking: what are some other, less conventional, but equally worthy reasons to job hop?

It didn’t take me long to come up with a few:

1) To check out a new pool of talent. And I don’t mean “talent” in the HR sense of the word. Office crushes have an expiration date. If there’s no longer anyone to dress up for, it may be time to move on.

2) To always be the new talent. Speaking of expiration dates, leave before yours is up.

3) Because it’s just sooo Gen Y. What, you’ve been at the same job for three years? LOL. You probs still have a Hotmail account too. Oh snnnnap!

4) To take advantage of the perks of always being the “new kid.” Namely, low expectations.

5) To reinvent yourself more often. One year, you can be a goth. The next, a shoulder-pad wearing ball-buster who, deep down, is a total softie. The year after that, a shameless neo-conservative who, deep down, still sucks. Such fun!

6) Because it automatically awards you more online real estate. Just think of how much longer your Info page on Facebook will be. Likewise for your LinkedIn profile.

7) When you’ve grown indifferent to your office nemesis.  Everyone needs a challenge at work. Don’t sell yourself short with a less-than-worthy arch-rival. If you are your own worst enemy, it’s time to skidaddle.

Have I missed anything? If’ you’ve got some other good reasons to job hop in mind, please chime in below!

There’s less of a chance you will be at a company when it goes down the toilet. I’ve stayed at two that if I would have left after 3 years I would have been a lot better off. One of the company’s is out of business and we will see what happens to Sprint.

with unemployment still surging and many losing hope in obtaining viable, real employment, it is a very sad state of affairs in america. many corporations are robbing peter to pay paul, playing the musical chairs with debt, etc…. this is a very serious and dire situation and the federal government has done very little to help the common person with real solutions and real help. They seem to be johnny on the spot with regard to foreign countries and illegals and the taxpayer is left out cold. Welcome to the 2nd depression, if you think 2009 is bad, just wait till 2010 and 2011.

The average career is five years. You need to start planning your next career move on Day One.

Jobs are as reliable as casino gambling. Commission opportunities beat wages. Longevity and security are no longer relevant.

amen Jackoff. The old boomer adage of “job security” is dead. employers do NOT care anymore since most if not all employees are easily dispensible, disposable or easily replaced with foreigners. The key is to work for yourself and/or as you stated via commission since wages are completely dependent on the whim of some corporate lackie.

@tom, the problem’s not foreigners, but companies’ total disrespect for their employees. take all the companies right now that, even though they’re very profitable, still demand concessions of their workforce. Like the Univ. of California, even, which is still giving bonuses (and salaries of more than $400k/yr.) while they furlough staff and kill educational programs.

the problem is a lack of ethics. immigrants and recipients of outsourcing are just as screwed as everyone else, if not more.

Amen Josh, you have have administrative lackies making 300-400K+/yearly as school junkies with no real world, private sector skills; the american greed and work addiction is disgusting there are no ethics, no respect.

, you have foreigners who get a taste of the money and they will work as HB-1 vista getting 6-figure salaries then once they get the green card they are golden, They should have not had these jobs to begin with as they should be given to legal americans not foreign workers on visas. They are here soley for the dinero. They could not care less about america–only dinero.

However, many companies have no ethics and think they can squeeze the lemon dry from foreigners as they are desperate (modern day slaves) to get their paperwork (HB–1 visas) signed every 90 days to remain in this country and do work (medical research) that many americans are qualified to perform however, not being a slave like many foreigners are willing to be.

When things begin fail you won’t be there for the finger pointing.

Dear Sir/madam it’s not finger-pointing, it is USA reality–HB-1visa (foreigners) taking jobs away from americans who are equally qualified to perform such job tasks. Let them get a job in their own country. They are only here for the green card, then it’s smoooooooth sailing until they are ready for the USA citizenship test. They are here only for $$$$$, they love America for $$$$ and greed, not for what it (america) used to stand for (ethics, integrity, honor, committment, etc…) now it’s about how much you can make, steal, screw over, and use and then fire/lay off that is the new USA.

Tom: I’m shit scared of foreigners too. Which is why I’m designing a biosfere where only 100% pure red-bloods need apply. Interested? Give me a shout-out, Tommie Ly! Only thing, how do we keep out the injuns? (I mean the pesky navahoes, not them guys with know-how about the innerweb and such. To help fix our pornbots.)
