Miley Cyrus and Kara DioGuardi: Mentoring Us Through the Recession

2009 May 28
Stay resilient...

Stay resilient ... be inspired

There’s an end in sight for the recession.

According to top economists, things should start turning around this year.

But even as the economy rebounds, unemployment is expected to climb, at least through the end of 2009. Companies won’t begin hiring until they feel confident that the recovery is solid.

Which means now more than ever, we have to stay vigilant. Hopeful. Motivated. And what better way to fuel that vigilance than to take inspiration from pop music?

We, Tania Khadder and Lyndsay Rush, the women of Unemploymentality, would like to share a couple of our favorite motivational tunes. When work (or lack thereof) gets us down, when we feel like we’ve failed, when there’s just nothing on TV, pop lyrics — poetry, really — carry us through…

Tania’s Choice:

Kara thinks you can do it too!

Kara thinks you can do it too!

Song Title, Artist:
No Boundaries
, by Kara “I can sing better than bikini girl” DioGuordi. (Sung by Kris Allen and Adam Lambert for the American Idol finale.)

How to set the mood:
The most effective (and dramatic) way to soak up Kara’s motivational poetry is to take a walk through a park, head hanging low, on a cloudy day. As the sun breaks through, you hold your head high, crack a smile, pick up the pace and disappear into the crowd.

Most inspiring stanza:

Every step you climb another mountain
Every breath its harder to believe

You’ll make it through the pain
Weather the hurricane
To get to that one thing

When you think the road is going nowhere
Just when you’ve almost gave up on your dreams
Then take it by the hand and show you that you can
There are no boundaries!

Why it will change your life:
This song is about not giving up, even when the going gets tough. It’s about being resilient. About chasing your dreams. Things I’ve heard so much about.

Also, it changed Kris Allen’s life. And he’s not better than you.

Lyndsay’s Choice:

miley-cyrus

Miley looks pretty serious to us

Song Title, Artist:
The Climb by Miley “I’m a serious artist, you guys” Cyrus

How to set the mood before turning on the song:
The best way to drink in this motivational melody is by riding a wild mustang bareback into the sunset with a boombox in your saddlebag.

Most inspiring stanza:

There’s always gonna be another mountain
I’m always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be a uphill battle
Sometimes I’m gonna have to lose

Ain’t about how fast I get there
Ain’t about what’s waiting on the other side
It’s the climb

Why it will change your life:
Miley clearly shows her deeper side with this heartwrenchingly inspirational ballad. When I first heard it on the radio, I made everyone in my car shut up so I could write her words on my heart. I then engraved the above stanza on a plaque and hung it on my door. Also I set “The Climb” as my ringtone and referred to 2008 as “the climb” in two different interviews. Before this song came out I didn’t even know what Eisenhower meant when he said “Accomplishments will prove to be a journey, not a destination”. All in all, if you have even 1/8 of the heart and drive that I do, this song will completely change your life and also blow your mind.

I used to cringe whenever I hear anything about Miley Cyrus. because every time I go visit the family, my little sis would make me listen to Hanna Montana and dance to that annoying song that goes boom dee clap dee clap (don’t remember the title, just this line .. so please don’t judge me).

But after hearing the climb for the first time last week, not only did I feel better, but I also gained a lot more respect for Miley.

    I haven’t heard Tania’s pick yet, but I’m sure it’s as good!

I look to Mr. Mister and ‘Take these Broken Wings’ for inspiration pop poetry during my dark moments:

How come the authors did not feature the (formerly unemployed)unglamorous sensation, Susan Boyle?
