The Unemployment Olympics: Where Winning Is Anything But

The Olympic registration booth: exponentially more sophisticated than any actual Unemployment Office
Yesterday in New York, around 40 laid off professionals competed in the Unemployment Olympics.
A Fax Machine Toss, Race Towards Unemployment and Pin the Blame on the Boss were just a few of the featured events.
The jobless got a chance – not just to get off the couch and out of the house for the first time since they were let go – but to meet their local, equally underemployed counterparts and potentially network.
They also got to put their frustration to good use, channeling their rage into athletic prowess (or something resembling it).
Victorious Olympians won gift certificates from local bars and restaurants, who sponsored the event.
Between Laid Off Camp and yesterday’s festivities, joblessness has never been so much fun! These days, it’s called Funemployment for a reason.
News of the event reminded me of the original Games for the unemployed, the Hipster Olympics:
That video was hilarious. Maybe they should do an unemployed hipster olympics….
OMG – I was JUST thinking yesterday that I wanted to do something like this in Seattle! People here hibernate. So, it’s now my mission to get them out of house pants and into the world with the other unemployeds.
I’m bummed I missed the olympics. I’ve been keeping in shape during my unemployment for just such an occasion.
That video is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in years. And it only gets funnier when you encounter these people firsthand.
maybe in time you will highlight hipster peddling themselves or assorted wares on the streets of america. seeing as i see a slant in representation. but the truth is never seen straight in this nation. hence the bs we in now.
the saviors you enamored are chilling.
mikey, I’m sorry but I didn’t understand a word of your comment!
I am going to bring this to SF. Been thinking about it for a while. . . . WTF is Mikey talking about.
