More things I do to keep busy while I’m laid off

2009 April 19

Five months into my unemployment and I’m still finding unique ways to keep myself occupied while I’m between jobs.  Here are a few you may want to try as well:

  • Dress in camouflage and stand next to buildings pretending that I’m blending in.
  • Go to the gym and ask pretty girls if they can “spot me while I blast my pecks and isolate ma’ glutes.”
  • Act like Richard simmons in the supermarket

  • Talk to people who are actually poor and try to convince them why they should feel sorry for me.
  • Run for my life once I’ve angered real poor people.
  • Dress inappropriately for formal events like trekkie conventions.

  • Set my alarm just so I can turn it off and continue sleeping – makes me feel like I’m in control.
  • Learn tons of things about old people and babies – they seem to be the only people who will talk to me.

… And what do you like to do while YOU’RE unemployed?

I like to do fun things with my old business cards:

I play urban golf, dressing up in golf attire and hitting balls through the city streets.

I cook, mostly. As a matter of fact, I explore the hands-on experience of being a thrifty house-wife (1.5 years married, no children though). I never have thought it would be my case – considering the ambitious declarations in collage and my early professional years to be the uber “Corpo Sapiens” on the way to the ultimate career nirvana of becoming one of the important and powerful ones at the top of the ladder… :) :)
One thing for sure, after making peace with it – house-wifing is pretty darn cool (that might depend on the husband/partner though) and so, in a primal way fulfilling!
    Love the blog!

Love this blog! Found from “Between the Jobs” blog… linking in my next article. Also just wrote one up about what I’d be doing if I were jobless. Might be inspiring to you as well: “Unemployed? Quite Frankly, I’m Jealous”

    Good one!
Incidentally there is an interesting website that is specifically dedicated to recession victims. It offers help and discusses all issues related to recession-www.angstcorner.com. It’s worth a visit!

I took advantage of my time by creating a employment website for people unemployed like me. The site is http://www.freegovtjobs.com.

I taught my cat to play catch with me. If I don’t win my latest battle with the EDD soon, you may be able to see us perform at your nearest BART station. Stay tuned.

Just stumbled into this blog recently, I’ve been unemployed for 2.5 months. I love what you said about the alarm, I’ll start doing more of that now : )

I have to tell you I’ve had one “those” days. I’ve spent hours on job sites and it finally cracked me. I found myself pathetically googling ‘unemployment blues’ and somehow got to your site. The picture of Richard Simmons is the only thing that has made me smile all day. Nicely done!

The alarm clock idea is mint. I have been unemployed for 1 month now and its amazing how something i used to dream about (just going back to sleep) is not possible. Now i wake up when ever and just get up no problems and take it for granted. Tomorrow will be a new day. PS urban golf site is down…
