Diaries of a Temp, Chapter 18: Setting the Record Straight
2009 April 22
-
And with two days left before the opening night of “Obsessed“, I know I don’t have much time. But like any good activist, I’m here to set the record straight.
-
Let’s start with the basics. “Obsessed” is the new suspense/drama/waste of time that casts Beyonce in the role of happily married wife to a successful asset manager. All is upper-middle-class happiness until her husband’s firm hires a new employee.
-
Enter: the temp.
-
This is where it gets ugly (and in less than two hours, all of my hard work is threatened to be undone).
-
Ali Larter, self described as “Just a temp” (Strike one. Rude.), sets her eyes on Beyonce’s husband on her first day (Strike two. Any resonable temp would never mess with Beyonce’s man). Things go from bad to worse as the Temp begins to obsess over her boss. From a Christmas Party hook up attempt (Strike three. All smart temps avoid holiday parties), to a staged suicide attempt, Ali Larter’s character gives temps everywhere a bad name. The kicker is the climactic scene where the Temp breaks into Beyonce’s home and plays with her children.
Oh no you didn’t.
Beyonce, meanwhile, has caught onto the Temp’s schemes and when she catches her in their home, decides she’s gonna take matters into her own hands. Cue: 20 minute chick fight.
While I strongly encourage you to never see “Obsessed“, if this weekend dawns and you find yourself thirsting for some B rate entertainment, I beseech you to keep this article in mind. Ali Larter’s portrayal/parody of a Temp has shocked and ashamed temporary workers everywhere and I would not be doing my literary duty if I did not warn you all beforehand.
Perhaps I’ll take my message one step further by staging a riot outside of my local movie theatre proclaiming that temps have rights (a liberty we are decades away from acheiving). Or perhaps not.
Either way, power to the people; down with injustice.
Temporarily Yours,
LR

Interesting, good post
Agreed! Although there were many prospects, but I NEVER EVER seen a temp take it that far. She’d be off that assignment as soon as she started.
How could she get past day 2?
Oh my god, it is an urban version of Fatal Attraction. I worked as a temp and I’m still waiting for a movie that puts dudes in the same position. Oh wait, there was Unlawful Entry with Ray Liotta but that was about cops… Hmm, maybe I can get a job as a cop but they’ll probably just tell me I’m overqualified… again. I’m all in favor of civil disobedience, where is that picket sign?
