Broke-ass Stuart: Enjoying life without spending your entire unemployment check
Hi I’m Broke-Ass Stuart. The fine folks of the Unemploymentality asked me to share some tips every once in awhile to help you enjoy your life without spending all your loot. So that’s what I’m gonna do. Why do I qualify to do this? I’m glad you asked. I’ve been writing shit to help broke-asses for five years now and in just the past couple years I’ve had two books come out, Broke-Ass Stuart’s Guide to Living Cheaply in San Francisco and New York To get a better idea of what I do, check out brokeassstuart.com. But enough about me, let’s get to saving you money. Some of the things that I’ll write about in the next few months will be really helpful and some won’t. But fuck it, that’s life right? Here we go:
Spirit Airlines: If you’ve done some traveling in Europe, you know that they have crazy cheap airlines like Ryan Air and Easy Jet, on which you can get flights for like 5 Euro plus taxes. In the States we’re not as lucky, unless of course you live in a city that Spirit Air flies to. If you do, Spirit Air might become your new best friend. Go to www.spiritair.com and sign up for their email list. You can choose up to five airports to receive deal notifications from, and they will send you deals every week. You can get flights to beautiful places like Peru, Costa Rica, Jamaica, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and even Detroit, for like $50 round trip (including taxes). I’m not even fucking with you. Can I get an Amen?
Apple Discount: I made the switch to Mac a couple years ago, and I’ve gotta tell you, I’m never going back. My Mac is SO much better than any PC I’ve ever had. If you’re ever considering making the switch, go talk to someone in the store to figure out exactly what you want, and then buy it online. If you do that, you can get the student discount by just clicking a box that says you’re a student. They never verify this. This student discount gives you like 10-15% off. Not bad right? I’m not sure if you can do the same with other Apple products, because I haven’t tried, but I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to.
Library Card: I know this sounds silly, but people always forget how awesome libraries are. Not only can you borrow millions of great books, but you can also borrow CDs, DVDs and other media too. Hell, you can just borrow a CD you like and rip it straight to your itunes, giving you free music.* Plus library cards are free themselves.
- Legal Note: Broke-Ass Stuart in no way endorses music piracy. He is simply speaking hypothetically.
- Broke-Ass Stuart’s note: Don’t listen to them, I totally endorse all forms of piracy as long as no one get hurt or killed. There’s nothing wrong with stealing from the rich. They probably had to do something to crooked to get where they are.

It seems like there’s no place to hide during this economic downturn… With that in mind, however, we’ve gotta all stick it out together! Right?

Please don’t advertise the fact that Apple doesn’t verify the student discount. It’d be a real shame if they came to their senses about this and changed their system. I have been on to it since buying my first Powerbook in 2004 and would dearly miss the discount.
