NFL cuts 150 Jobs. Please tell me Plaxico Burress was one of them

Yesterday the NFL cut 150 jobs, which is about 10-15% of their staff. They say it’s due to the general economic downturn and losing big sponsors like General Motors, who has pulled its advertising dollars from this year’s Super Bowl. And this wasn’t the first round of layoffs within the NFL. Last month the New England Patriots announced that they would be laying off 5% of their stadium crew, marketing crew and elsewhere.

Yeah, times are tough and companies have to be concerned with their bottom line. I can respect that. But perhaps an organization like the NFL or the New England Patriots, with their huge player salaries, could consider trimming some fat in more practical places – places that won’t leave 150 middle class people jobless before the holidays. Hmmm…where could you trim the fat in a league of millionaire jack asses? Two words for you: Plaxico Burress.

This guy makes $7,850,000 a year and he still carries an unlicensed firearm while “up in da club,” then shoots himself in the leg. But he keeps his job?  AND the player’s union goes to bat for him. Even if I was employed (which I’m not), I would hope that I would get fired over that type of work.

Besides – let’s assume for a minute that, of the 150 employees that the NFL laid off yesterday, the average salary was $50,000. Plaxico Burress’s salary alone could have covered their salaries for the next year. I know what you’re thinking – Plaxico isn’t on the NFL’s books, he’s on the Giants’ payroll. Fine. But couldn’t the Patriots have done something similar? It’s not like Tom Brady is doing anything for them.

So I hope that before the NFL or any other NFL team thinks about cutting staff in the future, they consider their player rosters first, especially here in the Bay Area. I recently saw the Raiders’ overpaid quarterback Jamarcus Russell at a basketball game and he was wearing a diamond-encrusted medallion in the shape of his football jersey around his neck. It was the size of a paperback novel. If he can afford to pay for that gaudy piece of shit, while consistently under-performing at the office every week, then the Raiders can definitely stand to give him a pink slip in the name of saving 200 jobs. Couldn’t they?

Just a thought, NFL. Consider it a gift from the good people at Unemploymentality.

He was carrying the gun because one of his teammates got robbed a few weeks earlier. If you are an out of work blogger I can see why. Most of your post is filled with latent racism(up in da club) and blatant stereotypes(overpaid atheletes). You wanna know who gets overpaid? The owners. They sit and rake in merchandising money while you complain about the atheletes in what can only be described as a Armchair Quarterback version of Rush Limbaugh. Only difference is that guy has a job.

    Good luck with your blog.

You are saying things that need to be said.
These guys only get away with $5m paypackets because, for some strange reason, it has become acceptable in our modern disfunctional society.

In the time of Plato and Socrates, the highest citizen was never paid more than 20 times the wage of a low-paid worker. If enough people speak out against this moral corruption, it will soon become apparant that a banker who votes himself a pay bonus of several million of other people’s money is no better than a common crook. It used to be called ‘embezzlement’ before so many snouts got into the trough ….. perhaps we should rename it ‘embezzlementality’.

I live in the UK, and these difficulties seem to be commonplace in today’s affluent economies. Greed lurks within all societies, but in these harsher times, I suspect that our tolerance will wear thin, and common sense will prevail.

    yours in the cause..
